Design Process

Most of my clients have a list of what they would like to accomplish with the new space that will be designed.  Often they have sketches of floor plans or pictures of architectural elements that they like.  My job is to take those ideas and bring them together into a workable set of plans that accomplishes the goals of my client, but is also well designed for traffic flows and functionality, while at the same time is architecturally pleasing to the eye.  As the early 20th century achitect Louis Sullivan said, form follows funtion!  The building needs to funtion well.

Home Owners

Following is a general outline for developing ideas into a set of plans for your project!
1. An initial contact with a client via email or phone.  We would discuss the project in general terms.
2. A meeting on site or virtually depending on the needs for the project.  We would discuss the overall look and function of the project as well as specific details.  We would come up with solutions for any specific design challenges.
3. A preliminary set of plans would be developed and submitted for your review and acceptance.
4. Any revisions would be made accordingly.
5. The final set of plans would be completed and submitted in .pdf format.  A complete set of plans typically includes floor plans, elevations, perspectives, cross sections as needed, and a foundation plan.  Specific additional plans may include a kitchen/bath, construction details, built-ins, or other design details as needed.

Contractors

I frequently work with contractors to develop plans for new homes, remodels, or additions.  I am flexible in meeting the contractors needs and requirements.  Some contractors prefer to just refer the home owner to have plans drawn, while others prefer to have an active part in the design process.  I do find that it is often helpful to have the contractor involved early on in the design process so as to have input on construction considerations as well as overall budget goals.
